- Edison used carbon fiber as the filaments in the earliest light bulbs because carbon fiber is a good conductor of electricity due to its heat tolerance
- Almost 100 years later Roger Bacon created a higher-performance carbon fiber by heating strands of rayon until they carbonized
- Later the process was changed because the fibers were only 20% carbon and lacked the strength and stiffness it needed
- A process was created by a scientist in Japan that contained 55% carbon
- Just recently carbon fiber was brought into the world of engineering
